WHITE-GOWNED ANGEL
Tianyi,13, USA
In the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic, many people are suffering from unemployment, illness, loss of loved ones, domestic violence, the consternation of quarantined life and uncertainty in general. Yet, in the midst of chaos and fear, it is the very women who emerged from the shadows to battle the crown prince pestilence. Although women are still not represented as much as men are in the sciences, they have made outsized contributions as effective leaders of many country’s responses as well as considerate and competent caregivers and empathetic and empowering contract tracers. Many women worked tirelessly, nonstop in the hospital and essential elsewheres; some trimmed their hair to become nurses; some became etched with scabs and blemishes from wearing masks; many saw deep dark circles grow under their weary eyes. All of these “scars” are beautiful testaments to their courage and compassion. This installation of my artwork commemorates their collective sacrifice during the Coronavirus pandemic. In my artwork, the main element is the portrait of a female doctor. Her entire body is covered with a protective suit streaked with black and white; her elegant face hidden behind the face shield and facial masks. Only her dainty eyes are featured, dotted with a few pockmarks. Tracing down the middle of the composition, both of her hand’s motion in a curvy crescent-shaped void, resembling a heart. Subtly, I have drawn close-ups of the virus particles to emphasize the ubiquitous viciousness of the virulent virus.
