PHENOMENAL

Chan Xin Yee, 14, Malaysia

I chose Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai for my artwork because I admire their courage. They represent the 21st-century women spirit. They are brave, strong, and are unafraid to speak their mind. Striving to convey issues that are important to mankind, they are willing go against all odds and risk everything including their life to get their message heard. I used mixed media as I feel that this is the best method to express my idea. Between Greta and Malala lies the female gender symbol, which symbolizes the pride of being a woman. The female’s hand stands for “power of femininity”. The circle of the female symbol is made of puzzles interlocking with each other; it illustrates women’s inner strength and leadership skills. The earth at the centre shows women from different cultures stand together to voice and fight for their rights. The two microphones stand for all of us can use our own voice to make a difference. The lion represents courage. Flowers mean hope. They convey the message of what Greta and Malala have done to humanity. Behind Malala are books, stationery, and learning materials, representing what she stands for: education for all. Behind Greta are glaciers, trees, fire, factories, a thermometer, and her iconic signboard: school strike for climate. These two young women have shown the world that change is possible if we want to make it happen. Finally, the logo is added at the top left corner of my painting.
