COVER UP

Nisya Sashipal, 14, Singapore

Cover up, we can see your shoulders. Cover up, we can see your stomach. Your shorts are too high, your top is too Low. Cover up. They make us cover up to help them not see us as an object. We are not the object for your desire. We are powerful women. In schools, female students have gotten in trouble for not wearing a bra or for wearing a bra when the straps are showing. Shoulders have been called “too distracting” for boys in the classroom, and there are more than a few reports of girls being sent home for the clothes chosen for them by a parent. Who is telling them to stop looking? Nobody asks them to put a shirt on but they want us to make sure our collar bones are covered. If they look at us then it’s our fault for looking the way we do.“You were asking for it,” they say. They see us broken on the ground and all they can come up with is, “You were asking for it”. Stripping our individuality because they can’t handle us being our own people. For the women who wear long beautiful dresses that show off their hips or the women wearing crop tops because they like the style, don’t you dare cover up. Don’t you ever Cover Up.
