BLACK-EYED SUSANS AND COVID-19

Pan Jiayao, 13, Singapore

I wanted to depict COVID resilience without directly depicting COVID in the artwork, which is why I decided to create my artwork like this. I wanted to portray how every woman or girl can be a catalyzer of COVID resilience, even while quarantining in their own homes – using digital media to their advantage. The girl in the artwork is a normal person, like you and me, looking perhaps even slightly unhappy or bored. However, using social media platforms like twitter, she creates the tweets floating above her calling for change to create a better future. Black-eyed Susans represent Justice as well as encouragement and motivation, and are placed in the background to show how the girl motivates and empowers others while trying to bring about justice. This girl, like many others, is a catalyzer of COVID resilience as she is using this difficult time when we are shut up at home to create change and promote a cause everyone can stand behind, thus leading others to push through quarantine by encouraging them to do good in the free time they have.
